Console boats
A console boat is an open boat, usually made of fibreglass, with a central steering console and walking space all round. As you can stand along the entire edge, console boats are popular for fishing and, thanks to their weight and ease of use, are very well suited for use with a trailer. A console boat does not have a cabin; if a model does have one, it is classified under ‘sports cruisers’.

Questions about console boats
Question not listed? Our advice articles go deeper into buying, insurance and maintenance.
To Advice →Why are console boats popular for fishing?
The central console allows you to walk and stand all around the boat. Many manufacturers supply accessories such as rod holders, storage boxes and space for a (second) electric motor. Console boats have an open cockpit that is easy to rinse clean, and they fit easily onto a trailer.
What is the difference between a console boat and a RIB?
A console boat has a rigid fibreglass hull with solid sides, whereas a RIB has a fibreglass hull surrounded by PVC tubes. As a result, a RIB is often more stable on the water, whilst a console boat offers more space in the cockpit, is easier to maintain and is usually cheaper.
Can I stay overnight on a console boat?
Usually not: a console boat doesn’t have a cabin. If you want to sleep on board, have a look at the sports cruisers.
