Tender sloops

A tender sloop originated as a dinghy for a larger yacht. Nowadays, we mainly recognise the tender sloop as a compact, open power sloop with clean lines and, generally speaking, a slightly higher speed. Tender sloops are ideal for boating with family or friends on lakes, rivers and canals. They are easy to handle and easy to store over the winter. When purchasing a tender sloop, pay attention to its stability and air draft, so that you can pass under the main bridges.

What to look for in a tender sloop?

Length and berth

The length determines how many people can travel on board in comfort, but also how much a berth or storage costs, and whether the boat is still trailable.

Engine

Electric, petrol or diesel, outboard or inboard: the choice determines noise, range and maintenance.

Air draft

On inland waterways with lots of bridges, a low air draft – or a fold-down hood and windscreen – makes a big difference to where you can go.

Layout and fittings

Bear in mind the seating area, cushions, storage space, a swimming ladder and a rain cover. These are often options that have a significant impact on the final price.

What is the difference between a tender sloop and a power sloop?

On Water&Wind, a tender sloop is the faster, more modern member of the sloop family, often with an outboard engine and a hull built for higher speeds. A power sloop has classic lines, an inboard or electric motor and is made for relaxed cruising at a gentle pace.

Should I choose an electric motor or a petrol outboard?

Electric is quiet, needs little maintenance and suits relaxed trips on lakes and rivers, but the range is limited and the purchase price is higher. A petrol outboard gives more range and speed and is easy to refuel. Think about how far and how fast you usually go, and whether you can charge at your mooring.

Can I keep a tender sloop on a trailer?

Many smaller tender sloops are light and narrow enough to tow. Check the weight with engine and the beam on the model page, and the towing capacity of your car. Larger models are usually kept on a berth or in boat storage.
