The bridgedeck sits approximately 85 cm above the waterline, which according to the yard reduces slamming from beam seas. The pendulum steering wheel can be used in a low, sheltered position or a high position in fine weather. Most of the controls are at the starboard aft, out of the spray. A forward cockpit behind a watertight door serves as a lookout post in ice.
The saloon on the bridgedeck offers 360-degree visibility from the chart table, seating area and galley. There are three layouts: an owner's version, an owner-guest version and a family version with four cabins and four bathrooms. The sail locker can be fitted out as a workshop, storage space or skipper's cabin. Interior: Darnet Design.
The hulls are made of 5 to 12 mm aluminium, designed to deform rather than tear in a collision, with watertight bulkheads and 74 mm insulation. The saildrives are protected by aluminium fins and the rudders have a flexible composite upper section. The boat can dry out for maintenance.
Two 60 hp engines provide propulsion, supplemented by diesel heating and power from a hydrogenerator, solar panels and a generator. Key dimensions: length overall 16.95 m (hull 15.90 m), beam 8.20 m, draught 1.50 m, displacement 18.6 tonnes and 170 m² of sail upwind. The Explocat 52-2 offers a Haven-Deck or Sky-Deck.
