Negotiating on a new boat: how much room is there on price?

Water&Wind5 October 20262 min read

Want to know how much discount you can get on a new boat? The margins on a new boat are different from those on a car or a kitchen, but there is more room than buyers often think. A few starting points to work with.

Smart timing

At the end of the season, or just before a new model year is introduced, dealers and yards are often more willing to move on price or terms. Show boats and demo boats (used for sea trials, but technically new) are regularly offered at a discount.

Boat shows

At the large international boat shows, such as boot Düsseldorf in January or the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Genoa International Boat Show in September, show deals are common, sometimes combined with free accessories or better financing terms. Always compare a show offer with the regular price, so you know how much discount you are actually getting.

Not just the headline price

A discount does not have to come off the purchase price. Also think of:

  • Free or reduced-cost transport to your home port
  • A trailer included in the purchase
  • Accessories such as life jackets, fenders and mooring lines
  • A free service or maintenance package in the first year
  • Winter storage for the first season

Several quotes

Ask several dealers or yards for a quote on the boats on your shortlist at the same time. This gives you not only a price comparison but also room to negotiate: a competing offer is often a reason for a dealer to take another look at the terms.

Watch what you give up

A lower price that comes at the expense of warranty, service quality or a longer delivery time is not always the best deal. Always weigh the discount against what you might give up for it.
