The boat is 13.85 metres long, 4.25 metres wide and has a waterline length of 12.56 metres. The standard keel has a draught of approximately 2.30 metres, whilst the shallow keel has a draught of 1.82 metres. Sources quote a displacement of between 9,900 and 10,400 kilograms, with 4,150 kilograms of ballast. The hull is constructed using resin infusion.
The engine produces 60 or 75 hp. The fuel tank holds 200 litres and the water tank 400 litres. The mainsail and jib together measure 121 m², whilst the asymmetrical spinnaker measures 180 m².
The J/45 is classified as CE design category A. There are layouts with two cabins and two toilets or three cabins and two toilets, with six or eight berths. The interior was designed by Isabelle Racoupeau.
In 2024, a Cruise version with a lead keel and a draught of 1.82 metres was launched.
