The hull is 12.83 m long and 4.24 m wide, with a draught of approximately 1.20 m. It has a double-keel design, which makes the vessel more stable in choppy seas. Wide gangways with steps run around the superstructure; there is a fibreglass door in the transom, and the saloon roof is also made of fibreglass to keep the centre of gravity low.
The propulsion system consists of a built-in Vetus Deutz diesel engine. Power output, cruising speed and fuel tank capacities are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Brandsma supplies the 42 with a guest cabin as standard, and various layouts are possible within the same hull. The cutters have been built since the early 1990s to a design by Dick Boon.
