Hanse was founded in 1990 by the German top sailor Michael Schmidt, who took over an old shipyard in Greifswald shortly after German reunification. In 1993, he unveiled his first mass-produced yacht, the Hanse 291, based on a Swedish design but with a price tag that made customers’ mouths water.

Since then, Hanse has grown to become one of the world’s largest sailing yacht builders, with a philosophy centred on ‘easy sailing’: yachts that are easy and enjoyable to sail, even without a large crew.
